“Ours is essentially a tragic age, so we refuse to take it tragically. The cataclysm has happened, we are among the ruins, we start to build up new little habitats, to have new little hopes. It is rather hard work: there is now no smooth road into the future: but we go round, or scramble over the obstacles. We’ve got to live, no matter how many skies have fallen.”

This paragraph begins one of my favourite books, Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D.H. Lawrence. And it feels like it is more relevant now than ever. The tragedy our world is facing; unprecedented it would seem. But as Lawrence writes, fortunately humans refuse to take things tragically. Our resilience after all, is what makes us a species above the rest. So why then do we sometimes feel tragic? Why do we allow ourselves to get stuck in the heaviness, the shadows, the lowest vibrations? And more importantly, how do we get out of it?

Duality exists in all areas of Nature and throughout our life. There is the masculine and feminine, the positive and negative, the light and dark, up and down, high and low, right and left, and so on. And our mind is no different. Within out mind we always have thoughts that are either helpful or harmful. Essentially, they are either love-based or fear-based.

When we are thinking, our thoughts may seem like they are just happening and that we have no control over them. This may be true to some extent. Our mind is not doing anything wrong. Your mind’s job is to think and think it will. Scientists haven’t figured out where thoughts come from yet. But what we do know is that your mind will naturally grab onto the thoughts it can without you feeling like you have any control over it. But, if you are surrounded by triggers or are immersed in an environment that is fear-based, then your thoughts will naturally grab onto whatever is familiar at that point in time.

Although it may feel like you cannot control your thinking and that thoughts just appear, to take charge over your mind simply requires awareness.

When you are stuck in negative thoughts, you must have the awareness to be able to identify that you are stuck in the first place before you’re able to move out of it. Then you must make the choice to move out of it. You must choose to switch from a lower vibration to a higher one – you must choose to move beyond fear and be led by love.

This isn’t easy though…

It sounds odd, but we actually feel comfort and a sense of safety when we choose to stay in fear. Choosing love is too risky. It means stepping into unfamiliarity, vulnerability and the unknown. Fear creates boundaries and limitations and despite how much you think you want to be free, as human beings we actually don’t know what to do with freedom. Rules keep us safe and they keep us connected and give us a sense of belonging and acceptance.

To move beyond fear, you have to take a risk. Once you have the awareness that fear is not working for you anymore, the only way to change it is to do something you’ve never done before. You have to break your rules and do something different.

You have to lean in to love – into the unknown and unfamiliar and trust that you’ll be okay.

You have to move from allowing your thoughts to just ‘appear’. You need to become greater than your thoughts. Awareness. Consciousness. This is the only way you will realise that your thoughts are essentially just that – thoughts. They are not reality. In fact, reality itself is subjective too. Your reality is a thought. When you can rise above and shift into a higher state of consciousness, connecting to greater awareness, then you are able to ‘see’ beyond any reality.

When we reach a higher state, we also move away from duality. There are no longer good thoughts and bad thoughts. There are no labels. There is just is. And we are just are. I am I am. There is no thing here because reality, time and space are all our own perception. So, if we move beyond these things that have been created to keep us within a boundary or limitation, what can we do and where can we go and what can we think? The answer is anything of course. When we move into limitless, we have achieved infinite potential.

If no thing, no space or no time became your known and your familiar then you would be inclined to practice using it more and more. You would no longer be bound by fears and rules that shaped your limiting stories and the way you live your life. No longer controlled by your thoughts because you have moved beyond thinking. You would reach possibility.

And that is love. Love gives us the freedom to reach possibility. Love is the difference between living a life you dream about or choosing to “scramble over the obstacles” as Lawrence suggests in his opening paragraph above.

So, what do you choose?

In love and light
