Reiki is a powerful tool for mental clarity, emotional balance, and physical well-being. But like any skill, the more we self practice, the better we get. While many people experience immediate benefits like reduced stress or improved focus, Reiki is truly a lifelong journey—one that requires consistency and patience to fully realise its potential.
But how do you turn Reiki from a fleeting activity into a regular part of your life? And why is it essential to keep practicing over time? In this post, we’ll explore why continuous practice is vital for Reiki and share practical tips for building a regular Reiki routine.
It’s common to feel like you’re “doing it wrong” when distractions flood your mind during a self Reiki practice. But that’s exactly the point! The more you practice, the better you get at observing your thoughts without getting swept away by them, but also at recognising what is going on with your energy and how you need to respond – for example using symbols or different hand positions to help with the shifts. Reiki helps you to stay present and in the high frequency of uncondfitional love, even in the midst of distractions.
Reiki teaches us how to respond to stress, rather than react impulsively. By continuing to practice, you strengthen your ability to pause, breathe, and respond with clarity in difficult situations. The more you practice, the better you get at handling stress with a calm and balanced mind. Not just in our treatments, but more importantly, in our daily life.
Through regular Reiki, we become more attuned to our thoughts, emotions, unconscious patterns and our energetic wellbeing. As you practice more frequently, your self-awareness deepens, allowing you to understand your habits and triggers, leading to more intentional, empowered choices.
Reiki is like physical exercise for the soul. You won’t see dramatic results after just one session, but with consistent practice, you’ll start noticing a shift in how you feel, think, and respond to the world. Over time, Reiki becomes a powerful tool for creating lasting change.
If you’re looking for something fast and a quick-fix, Reiki can be soothing and feel great after just one session, but for the full benefit, it’s an ongoing journey. Whether you’re facing a new challenge or experiencing a period of peace, Reiki adapts to meet you where you are. The longer you practice and the more you show up, the more profound your understanding and experience of it will become.
How to Build a Regular Reiki Practice
Now that we understand the importance of consistent Reiki, let’s look at how to make Reiki a regular part of your life. Here are some practical tips to help you establish and maintain a consistent practice:
Start small and build gradually
It can be tempting to set lofty goals when starting something new, but jumping into an hour-long Reiki session on day one can feel overwhelming. Start with just 5–10 minutes a day and gradually increase the duration as you get more comfortable. Even brief sessions can be powerful, especially when practiced consistently.
Tip:Use a timer or Reiki app to keep track of your session length. This way, you won’t have to worry about watching the clock, allowing you to focus solely on the practice.
Make some time each day to practice
Consistency is key. Having a set time helps make Reiki a regular habit, just like brushing your teeth or exercising. However, you also don’t want it to end up feeling like a chore or something you have to do. Reiki, over time, becomes so much more than just something you practice, but it truly becomes a part of who you are. Remember our Reiki precept – Just for today, I will work honestly. Usui Sensei here is reminidning us to be authentic in all we do – in life and work. So when you practcie, always make sure it aligns authentically. If you can’t manage 30 minutes today, do 5 authentic minutes instead.
Tip: My favourite thing to do is pair Reiki with an existing habit, like drinking your morning coffee or winding down before bed. This creates a natural anchor for your Reiki practice. If you already have spiritual or connection practices, remember also that Reiki is complementary to other modalities. For example, try it with your yoga, meditation, crystal healing or essential healing practice!
Create a comfortable, peaceful space
The environment in which you practice can significantly affect the quality of your session. Find a quiet, comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed. It could be a cozy corner in your living room, a space near a window, or even a spot outdoors – you can even practice Reiki with Mother Earth and share this gift with her.
Tip: Consider adding a few items that help you relax, such as candles, cushions, or calming plants, to make your Reiki space feel special and inviting.
Use guided Reiki practcies to stay focused
If you’re new to Reiki or find it challenging to stay focused, guided Reiki practcies can be incredibly helpful. Many apps and websites offer free guided sessions that lead you through different techniques. These can help you stay on track and prevent your mind from wandering too much.

Track your progress
Tracking your Reiki practice can be motivating and help you build consistency. You could keep a journal where you record your thoughts, feelings, and insights after each session. Or monitor how your energy centres (Chakras) feel or any shifts you experience. It’s also a great idea to monitor your progress in your daily life too – how is your consistent practcie helping you show up as a better mum, employee, partner, friend, practitioner etc?
Tip: Celebrate your small wins! If you practiced every day for a week or a month, give yourself credit. Positive reinforcement will help you stick to your routine.
Be Kind to yourself on off days
Some days, you might miss a session, or find your mind wandering incessantly. That’s okay! Reiki is not about perfection; it’s about showing up and being present. It’s about taking time to connect to YOU. If you skip a session or struggle to focus, avoid being hard on yourself. Just acknowledge the difficulty and get back to your practice the next day.
Tip: Think of Reiki as a gift you give yourself, not a task you have to check off your list. The less you pressure yourself, the more sustainable your practice will be.
Join a community or Reiki share
Sometimes, joining a Reiki group or attending a class can provide extra motivation and structure. Having a community, such as teh Nourished Energy Facebook group or a teacher to support you can keep you accountable and deepen your practice. It might even be time to continue with your training or have another Attunement!
Tip: Look for local or online Reiki groups or workshops that fit your schedule. Group Reiki can provide a sense of connection and shared intention. If you’re interested in experiencing an online Reiki share – I offer a monthly meet-up. For more information, take a look at the Events page on my website for details.
Reiki is an invaluable tool for personal growth and well-being, but its benefits truly unfold with time and consistent practice. As you commit to your Reiki journey, remember that it’s not about perfection or achieving a specific goal. It’s about creating space for stillness, connection, and inner peace in your life.
By starting small, setting a regular time, and being kind to yourself when life gets in the way, you can build a sustainable practice that will enrich your mental, emotional, and spiritual health for years to come. The key is persistence—showing up for yourself every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
So, take a deep breath, place your hands in Gassho, find a comfortable spot, and start today. The more you practice, the better you’ll become—and the more you’ll benefit from the transformative power of Reiki.
In love and light,
